Craftsmanship

The process of relief wood carving involves hand-chiseling wood with the use of chisels, gouges, and knives. No 'modern' tools such as sanders are used. This is a layering technique, carving out out textures in the wood. Joe takes grate pride in his craft, and staying true to the age old craft of relief wood carving. The pieces are highlighted with colored stains, instead of paint, in order to let the wood grain to shine through. Every piece Joe produces carries a lifetime guarantee.

Teaching

Joe is involved in teaching the craft of woodcarving to serious artisans, offering both seminars and videos. Starting out with minors in wood technology, graphics, and metals with a degree in technology education from Central Connecticut State University Joe has spent most of his life teaching his craft in one way or another. He has spent the last 24 years demonstrating techniques at shows, seminars, and within the Connecticut Woodcarvers Gallery.
